３月２３日、第７５回アカデミー賞にて、宮崎駿監督作品「千と千尋の神隠し」が長編アニメーション賞を獲得した。日本の視覚文化の素晴らしさが認められた一瞬であった。ジャパニメーションの源を考える時、ふと紙芝居が思い浮かぶ。 日本では現在、一般に保育園や幼稚園で先生たちが、語りの教材として用いている紙芝居。題材は、昔話から、創作物語までさまざまだ。その昔、紙芝居屋のおじさんが、自転車の荷台に水飴やお菓子を積んで町の公園や路地裏へ出かけ、放課後に集まるこどもたちを相手に紙芝居を披露したものだった。お菓子を買ったこどもたちは、お話が聞きやすい前列に陣取る。テレビのない時代のこどもたちの最大の娯楽といえた。今では、テレビやコンピュータがその役割を占め、プロの紙芝居屋さんの数は激減している。 幼い頃に、紙芝居に魅せられ、長じてストーリーテラーの道を歩んだのは、末吉正子さん。先の２月にカナダのトロントで催されたストーリーテリング・フェスティバルの招待を受けて来加した。「４歳くらいの頃、お話の続きが聞きたくって、紙芝居屋さんのあとをついて隣町まで行って、帰れなくなったこともありました。おまわりさんに連れられて家に帰れたんですが。わたしの語りのスタイルは、紙芝居のおじさんの影響かもしれません」と末吉さん。 20年ほど前に、地元の図書館で絵本講座を学んだのをきっかけに、人形劇、語り、紙芝居をこどもたちに披露するようになった。１０年ほど前に移住した米国コネティカット州で著名なストーリーテラーと知り合ったことから語りの道へ。アメリカ滞在中に図書館で語りを初め、多くのストーリーテラーと知り合い刺激を受けた。 今回のトロント訪問では、日本の昔話を英語で披露するのみならず、紙芝居の使い方をトロント公共図書館の児童司書に指導した。参加した司書１８名は、紙芝居の奥義をかいま見て驚いていた。拍子木をうちあわせて聴衆を集めたり、台紙を引き抜くタイミングや台紙の裏のテキストの読み方など、実際にやってみた司書たちは、「正子は素晴らしい語り手だ」、「日本のビジュアル文化ってすごい」、「絵本を読み聞かせるのと、紙芝居を語るのは違う」、「すべてが新鮮で楽しかった」と童心にもどったように喜んでいた。トロント公共図書館では、既に紙芝居を各種購入している。末吉さんに指導を受けた司書たちが、今後、カナダのこどもたちにを紙芝居の楽しさを広めてゆくことだろう。 紙芝居は、物語を伝える大切な手段のひとつ。「物がたり」の「物」は「もののけ（霊、Spirit）」に通じていると言う末吉さん。こどもたちに色んな話を語ることで、昔話の叡智を、「愛と平和を伝えたい」と目を輝かせて話してくれた。 日本語と英語の紙芝居の購入先 http://kamishibai.com/ 末吉さんは日本にテレブレーションを紹介した人でもある。テレブレーションに関しての英文サイト http://www.tellabration.org/...
